Hi all

Wonder if anyone can help. I'm off to Svalbard on 1st January 2012 to 5th January 2012 with a friend. I've tried to contact various tour companies about what we can do for a few days whilst we're there. However, not one has replied. Does anyone have a recommendations for us on who to contact and what's available to do at that time. We're staying at basecamp, and I think they do excursions, but I'm after some other options.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

John

Is this a joke?
You are aware of the amount of dayligt in Longyearbyen in winter?
The alst sunset was at October 26th and the Sun will rise again Feb 16th 2012
In the period you mention the Sun will at noon be 11° below the horizon - meaning that you at noonMAY be able to figure out where the horizon is (limit is normally set at 12° below).

Best thing to do: bring lots of books - look for Nothern Light (which may be towards the south).
(All the ppl. working at the tour companies are at holiday in the tropics at thta time, I guess).

Thanks Bjoern

Well I'm quite excited by that, but we'd like to do something during the few days we're there.

Thanks

Could you tell what you expect to be able to do in darkness so deep that you cannot see the horizon?
You are aware that you need to be armed (and able)/with an armed guide if leaving town?
You can find the local tour agencies here: http://www.svalbard.net/index.php?c=166&kat=ActivitiesinSvalbard those that I happen to know of, start their winter programme some time in February (with the first daylight).

Polar night is quite special, you can go Snowmobiling at night http://www.spitsbergentravel.com/Start/Adventures/Winter-Excursions/Polar-Night-Safari/ or enjoy an ice cave tour or in an old coal mine. Northern lights are also spectacular.

Cheers
