hello all,

i plan to take the hurtigruten from bergen up to tromso at the end of july/beginning of august. i heard that student discounts are available - is this true? where can i buy my tickets? can i wait until a few days prior to the trip, and purchase them in bergen? i don't need my own room, just a place to lay down a sleeping bag.

thanks!

If you start an online booking on the homepage you simply fill out as "Student" instead of "Adult".
The rebate on Point to point trips (on the "naked" fare) is substatial.
Not aware of which types of student identification they accept -better ask!

Lying in sleeping bag on the floor in public areas is "not excouraged" - have heard different on that actually being accepted. Normally I think you are asked to go to a place with "airplane chairs".
Remember the constant dayligt and arrivals at harbours on all times. The ship is never quiet. The cheapest cabins are cheap - at least compared to all the other costs - the fare, food etc.

Are there other homepages than this one: http://www.hurtigruten.com/norway/ ?
You change language version upper left and go to booking clicking "Start online booking"

Most of the ships does not have "airline seats", but sleeping in the lounges is usually OK if you look clean, tidy and sober and don't bring too much stuff with you (leave that in the luggage area). Do not settle down until most passengers have gone to their cabins for the night, and be prepared to be awoken at 5 pm when the cleaners need to vacuum the sofa you're sleeping in.

Students get a 50 % discount with a valid photo student ID. I think international ID cards are accepted. The minimum student fare is NOK 230, so you do not save much on short voyages.
