Restrictions on visiting Svalbard?

Me and the wife will stay in Svalbard for 3 nights this June. I'm asking this just to be on the safe side.

I had heard before that special permission is needed to visit Svalbard.. But searching on the internet I can't find anything that says this. I know that once in Longyearbyen, I am not supposed to leave town because of the danger from bears, but I don't think there are any problems with flying there, it should be the same as travelling anywhere within Norway.

Can someone just confirm this please?

You will have no worries visiting Svalbard, it is as you say just like flying to any city in mainland Norway. It is true that you should be aware of the polar bears, leaving Longyearbyen is not permitted without arms. I recommend you take a guided tour around.

It is certainly permitted leaving the city without firearms, but it is a quite stupid thing to do.

Large parts of Svalbard is national park, once there, get info on special rules.

Polar bears are dangerous and not afraid (unlike the european brown bear), and you can not run away from it. Go on a guided tour.

You only need special permission if you intend to set off on an independent tour outside of Longyearbyen. If you're only going on guided trips with Svalbard tour operators, you don't need permission from the Sysselman.

Individual travellers only need a permit (and insurance) when leaving "Managemant Area 10", as every trip outside this area is considered an "expedition". There is, however, no realistic way of venturing out of this area on a 3-day visit.
