We are a group of 5 adults and 4 children aged between 5 and 8 years , planing to visit Norway in the third week of October 2011.
We intend to fly to Bergen from London, also have hopes of being in the Geirangerfjord area, to do a boat cruise there, also travel along the famous Trollstigen mountain road from Geiranger. I am not sure if such facilities are available as it is outside the time schedule which ends in September. Please advise us regarding the possibility of such a tour incorporating the above.
Also I would like to request for some information re appropriateness in terms of weather if we ventured north for the Northern Lights - is that at all a possibility in this time of the year?
I would be grateful for your reply.
Many thanks and regards

Trollstigen is closed during winter, normally november/december,- so you are probably going to make it. You have to hire a car, since the tourbus isn´t running in october.
[http://www.fjord1.no/] runs the ferries in normal timetable at the Geirangerfjord, not a cruise, but a absolutely adapted to tourists, with observation decks and multi lingual guiding commentaries.

Travel north should not be any problem.

You will have enough darkness in October to see them, if it is otherwise possible. But remember that October is the wettest time of year, and you need to have both clear (cloud-free) skies and sufficient auroral activity to see them. Best also away from city lights, and avoid full moon. Worth having a look at the weather forecast to see if there is any chance of clear skies at night. yr.no is such a good meteorological site I use it for forecasts for other countries.
