Hello,

we were dreaming to see the Northen Lights and finally ready to go! The plan is to spend 4 days in Tromso hunting auroras right after the NY day.

we are thinking if to spend the NY night itself in Oslo or in Tromso? I assume staying in Oslo should be more fun, but it also means decreasing the opportunity to see auroras by one night as Oslo is too much illuminated... what would you recommend?

thanks a lot in advance!

I would recommend that you see what you would like to do and see in Tromso, apart from the Northern Lights, just going somewhere to see the Northern Lights for 5 nights without any other reason is too me a bit crazy. There is no guarantee you will see the lights.

Stay as long as possible in Tromsø, it's actually a rather nice town with some party options. Rather take a trip to another norther town e.g. Alta if you'd like to move around. Svalbard would have been an option, but 5 days are too short for both.

As Richiavo says, there is no guarantee to see it. Just cloudy weather or changed pattern could spoil the sight. Still, Northern Norway is exotic and beautiful in the dark season.
