Hi All,
I have pretty much sorted out the majority of my travels through Norway, however I am really struggling with one section of the journey.
I am travelling along the coast southwards on the Hurtigruten, and when I phoned them up, the agent indicated that Ornes was a place to go being a major gateway to either Mo I Rana and/or Saltfjellet. I was a bit unsure as I had not heard of it, but I dutifully booked it, and am now in the position where I have 2 nights off the ferry in Ornes - or wherever I can find accommodation! I am on my own, and I am guessing it will still be cold at that time of year - beginning of April? To make it worse, I have now discovered it will be the Easter period, so I really need to get something booked.
I am trying to think of options and so far have thought of:

  • going back to Bodo via the road, preferably on a bus or train, if they run from there.
  • going on the Hurtigruten to Stamsund and return to Ornes (although I would have already been to Lofoten Islands)
  • going to Mo I Rana or Saltfjellet, although it means going back via Bodo as far as I can see
  • going southwards to either Bronnoysund or Sandnesjoen on the Hurtigruten and stay 1 night, and then returning to Ornes, to go back southwards

Any help with this predicament would be greatly appreciated. There may be a solution I do not know of,
Many thanks

Mandie

I googled for things to do and places to stay in the same area a couple of weeks ago. I found the following company offering excursions by foot and kayak: http://www.rocksnrivers.no/wips/1544534743/ I haven't been in contact with them, so I really don't know how good they are. But maybe worth checking out since you'll be in Ørnes for a couple of days anyway. They might be able to give you some tips at the very least.

Another website for the region, for accommodation and attractions: http://www.kystriksveien.no/index.krv?lng=en

Ørnes population 1600 is a small nowhere. It is one of those places that reminds you that Norway is interesting mainly for its scenery, not its settlements. It is a gateway to Mo I Rana if you have to go to Mo I Rana, but you don't have to go there and I'm not sure you'd want to, since it is notable mainly as an industrial town. Saltfjellet is an important and very large nature reserve and scenic area, but in April it will probably still be in the grip of winter. But some village in the middle of nowhere in northern Norway not far from famous scenery is unlikely to be an actual hardship, after all there is an awful lot of scenery, not all of it famous, to entrance you, though some transport might help you enjoy it.
