Hello there,
I have booked my boyfriend and I a surprise trip to Norway this September. We are both students and therefore on a budget but I would like to do this trip as cheaply as possible. I knwo Norwar is a very expensive country but my boyfriend has had a huge fascination with this country for years so when I managed to find cheap flights to Norway, I decided to just go for it. We will be there for seven nights and after spending two days in Oslo I would like to get the train to Bergen and see some of the surrounding areas. Is it possible to do this cheaply? We are not fussy travellers at all and would be happy to camp and eat very little. We recently had a trip to Paris where we ate from the supermarkets and walked absolutely everywhere on foot, so I am convinced that even the most expensive places on earth can be seen at a minimal cost. Things like travel and accommodation are unavoidable expenses but does anyone have any advice or tips on how to see Norway on a budget? Any help greatly appreciated, thanks, Emma.

For the train: look for bargain prices (perhaps 200 NOK Oslo-Bergen), a detour by train on Flåmsbana (Flam railway) is also recommended. If you fly you can check Norwegian or SAS airlines. Loads of departures between Oslo and Bergen. There are also express buses (moderate prices) doing slightly different routes. If you bring sleeping bags, look for cabins ("hytter") as there are still some modest cabins with modest prices. In cities consider youth hostel (int'l or YMCA).

Bergen is compact so you can walk anywhere. In Oslo you can get a 24 or 48 hour ticket for all public transport.

If yoyu are planning on taking the train from oslo to Bergen you can get the tickets for as low as 199 nok if you book them early online at www.nsb.no.

But i Would recomend to take the train to Myrdal where you jump of and take the Flåm Railway down to Flåm. http://www.flaamsbana.no/

From Flåm i will recomend tat you take the boat trip To Gudvangen. it is a wery beutiful boat ride. You should not miss out on that going to Norway. Could not fint his one in english. http://www.fjord1.no/default.asp?page=348
From gudvangen you can take the bus to voss if you want to go on the train again og you can take the buss dirrectly to Bergen. www.tide.no

This is a pacage tour of the whole thing, im not shure witch one works out most expensive, but you can have a look around... http://www.norwaynutshell.com/default.asp

Hi Emma,

Well I am a budget traveller as well and went to Switzerland and stayed in hostels for the first time! And then I headed to the local pizza / kebab house for some food, supermarket etc so it is definately possible.

I have been to Oslo many times myself, but I have also stayed there with friends or relatives so I did not have a problems with the accomodation part.

Please bear in mind that hotels are expensive in Norway.

Eating out in Bergen can be done from supermarkets or food stands, either in the railway station or from the various 7/11 stores in the city centre. Coffee's available in each store plus slices of pizza, muffins, Danish and the like. Coffee's good and the larger stores have a good selection of other foodstuffs available. I've stayed at Crowded House in Bergen on my last independent trip (they have/had dorm accomodation too), but the last visit was based on the Thon Hotel, Bryggen. Pygmalion cafe near the main tourist office is a good eating place as is Cafe Opera, but not at real budget prices...
