Hey guys, me and some others have decided we are going for a week stay in the Tromso area to hang around for the Northern lights.....I have done research and i know that I will have to monitor solar activity and the weather.....However there isn't much on where to go after Tromso...For instance to see the lights you obviously have to go somewhere with very little light pollution, Tromso being a fairly average sized town I imagine would have quite a bit of light pollution, so where would you guys go to get away from the city lights? and how accessible would that be to a group of 4 or 5 people? Would it be too cold to camp out in the wilderness if that was where we had to go?

Thanks guys

If you have a car, Whale Island is popular for northern lights viewing and there is a road "the northern lights route" which heads towards Finland.

If you aren't on a budget, there are lots of great options e.g. the Icehotel in Alta (can get there by plane or bus) or the likes of a cabin or sami tent at Camp Tamok in the Lyngen Alps.

some companies (again this depends on your budget) do overnight dogsled trips which sound like fun!

just head a few miles out of town, and you will be fine to see northern lights on a clear night....
there is a artic zoo about 150 km south which is really worth the trip, so is snowshoe walking...
