can anyone tell me what is the best time to see the northern lights? if i remember correctly, i read in travel brochure last yr that there is a week in summer when its best to travel...
thinking of a cruise...any ideas?

In order to SEE the Northern Lights it has to be dark!! OK?
In the sumemr there is something called Midnight Sun - is. the Sun does not set up north or only for a few hours in the south (7 in Denmark) - and while the sun is set there is strong twilight. OK?
possibilities to see NL in the summer = same as studying the stars at noon in Spain
I t is very unlikely that you could see an aurora in Norhtern Europe during summer, due to the midnight sun.
As pointed out quite clearly by posters above: to see the Northern Lights, you have to visit during winter.

People in the Nordic countries tend to be quite reserved, and will rarely approach you unless you approach them, so do: we're really nice when you get to know us!

I have actually seen the aurora borealis in August, by which time it gets pretty dark in northern Central Finland. But this is rare and unpredictable.
I'd call it summer because it was warm, but autumn was on the way for sure.

The answer to getting as close to the North Pole as possible has a simple answer:
You can visit Svalbard at a very reasonable price - lower price than many not quitre as far northern places in Greenland - this is the northermost inhabited place.
It is warm indoor! So if you let others watch for a NL display and only get out when there is something to see?
If you want the lights, come in winter. They are visible throughout Norway, you don't need to go to the North Pole - I saw them in Oslo last week. However, you do need favourable weather conditions - clear skies, no moon and lunar activity. Good luck! PS - the midnight sun is pretty amazing, too :)
