God dag;

Myself and 2 others will be spending a week in Norway in August (flying into Oslo) and are looking at going to the places listed below. Wondering if we would be better off renting a car versus going with trains and buses (I realize we will need to take ferries with either option). Although it would be nice to not have to drive, concerned about having to wait for public transport versus convenience of a rental car. I know petrol is expensive and there are road tolls but with us being able to split costs, maybe it is best to rent a car. Your thoughts please. Thanks much.

Jotunheimen National Park:
Besseggen ridge trail
Sognefjellet Road

Geirangerfjord:
Geirangerfjord to Hellesylt ferry trip

Bergen

Stavanger:
Preikestolen hike
Kjeragbolten hike

The travel in Norway is often dictated by the surrounding topography of the area to a large degree, a good example of this is that there is no train between Bergen and Stavanger, there is a 'Fast Ferry' by sea and the road between the two places goes inland for a fair bit of the way.

Having traveled around the area a fair bit, i do see advantages and dis-advantages in both forms of travel, perhaps a mixture of both, say jump on a train one day and hire a car the next, but one thing is for sure very careful planning is called for.

The whole area is indeed worth looking at, and good luck!

Thanks for the response Jedgerandclyde. A combination of both will likely be what we will decide to do, possibly taking the train from Olso to Bergen, ferry to Stavanger, train back to Oslo and then rent a car for a few days to visit the Jotunheimen and Geiranger areas.

It is also a good idea to check the Express busses (http://www.nor-way.no/)
