Hi

I'm planning a short break to Norway in June, but I'm wondering - is there a particular weekened (closest to June 21st ie midsummer?) where everything closes down and everyone just goes out and parties and drinks?

Not sure if that is a good weekend to be there or to avoid like the plague, if you have just come to see the country and don't really want to be part of that. (I'm getting old!)

If there is such a weekend can anyone tell me when it is in 2013 - am assuming it's the weekend after June 21?

Thanks in advance

Unlike in Sweden, Midsummer is not such a big deal in Norway, and certainly not a public holiday. If the weather is nice, some people will make a seaside picknick or barbecue, but it's usually pretty much a family affair. Public parties are not common, so don't worry - chances are you won't even notice it's Midsummer....

and in Norway (and Denmark) it is not called Midsommer but it is Sankt Hans (Saint John??) that is celebrated.
Sankt Hans' day is the 24th so the "celebration" is the evening 23rd (bonfire, no Midsummer pole).
In 2013 23rd is a Sunday,
Longest day (real midsummer) is in this part of the world 21st in 2013
