I travel to Bergen a copuple of times a year with work and I've had trouble finding a decent hotel on the university side of town. I've stayed at Augustin Hotel once and although it was nice it was just to far from where I needed to go (plus I got woken up at 3 am by a band rehersing in their cellar....). I've also been at the Scandic City Bergen wich has the usual dingy Scandic feel (somehow the Scandic hotels always seem to have a neglected feel to them). So, any good tips from people who have stayed in Bergen?

The hotel closest to the University is Park Hotel Bergen, which is less than a five minute walk from all four faculties in the town centre (you've neglected to inform us which one is of relevance to you). Since I live in Bergen I obviously very rarely stay in our hotels, but if the exterior is anything to go by, it's probably quite nice.
Otherwise, if you're looking for a place with some character, Grand Hotel Terminus would be your choice. It's conveniently located in a quiet alley right behind the railway station. Walking distance to University between approx. 8-15 minutes, depending on your faculty of choice. Again, I've not actually stayed there, but speak from solid experience when I say that its whisky bar is top notch.
