Hello all, hope you are all well.

Me and a friend are looking to go hiking in Jotunheimen in late June early July.

As this is our first trip of this sort I was wondering if people could offer us some advice.

We plan on wild camping the majority of the time if not all the time.

We would ideally like to stay for 3 weeks, but we are worried about the cost of supplies such as food.

Can anyone advise us on whats best to do for food and water for a trip of this period?

As for the travelling it took some research but I think the best way is to get the plane to olso then a bus from oslo to Gjendesheim, its going to be a long journey but I cant really see any other way apart from a train or plane up to otta then a bus from there.

Many Thanks.

Tom

If wild camping for 3 weeks, you have to carry lots of food if not buying it at the cabins. Prices are rather steep there considered to the large towns, but do remember that the food is often carried in by helicopter, snowmobile or by boat.

To keep costs down, bring lots of cheap dried food such as rice, pasta, mashed potatoes, dried bread and the like, and resupply "wet" foodstuffs in the cabins or when near towns.

Water is available almost everywhere, but the water from lakes, streams etc. is not as clean as many Norwegians tend to believe. Using desinfection tablets is a good precaution.

Bus is the best way to go from the Oslo area to Jotunheimen. Several options are available. Another option is using the Bergen railway to get into the mountains, but that won't be Jotunheimen. You could easily walk there within a few days, though.

You have a good and viable plan and I agree with Blazius’ comments. But you should remember that Jotunheimen is the most barren part of Southern Norway mountain plateau. You may find yourself between a rock and a hard place. There are friendlier parts. And don’t underestimate the longevity of snow in high and northerly places, even in the beginning of July. Check out DNT on the web!

Many thanks for the replies I really appreciate it.

What would the be the best way of carrying the water, I was thinking around the 6-9l amount so that if we find ourself without a place to fill up we at least have 2 to 3 days supply. But I am unsure of how best to go about carrying this amount of water.

If this question would be better suited to the hiking section just let me know and Ill post it there.

Thanks again.

2 litres of water carrying capacity is plenty if you have the ability to boil or desinfect water.

Thanks, my only concern was if we were unable to find a water supply, but looking at the map it seems there should be plenty.

Hi there,
While walking in Norway, I noticed that many Scandinavians didn't even carry water bottles they simply had a cup attached to their backpack and took a drink at stream crossings.
I spent a week in the Jotunheimen and never had a problem with finding water.
