Hi! In the beginning of June we're flying to Oslo, taking a train to Bergen, and then renting a car (auch! the price of gas in Norway!) to head north for about three nights at a cottage away from everything else - except mountains and salty fjords. The only piece missing in the trip is the cottage/B&B/farm/cabin/etc; and I would like to make use of your wise advise to find one. Do you know of any good website with listings of places to rent?

We want a place that is quite, with as few neighbors as possible, and of "natural beauty", which as far as I know should be characteristics easy to find in the fjords. I'm considering mainly Norfjord and Sognefjord, and gravitating towards the latter if the drive from Bergen would be shorter.

So far I've found a cabin in a farm that is "a stonethrow away" from Urnes Stave Church. Sounds great, but would it have too many tourists around? Is there such a thing as a touristy place at the fjords?

Many thanks!

Define touristy.

You'll never feel cramped or in line unless you are waiting for some kind of transport. There are places/times when tourists are by far in majority to locals, but the fjords are rather huge and it won't feel touristy like it feels in Rome.

Urnes Stave Church will have visitors during daytime, but not at night.

For the ultimate lonely experience you may rent a lighthouse or similar. (there are a few, but can be somewhat pricey, and on the outermost cost, not in the fjords.)

The price of petrol in Norway is not any different from rest of Europe - where the gov. tries to keep consumption low - (even in Norway that is a big oil exporter!). Nevertheless it will be the smallest cost of all of your holiday!

For renting cabins for a week: There are 1000s of portals on the net. The local tourist offices (look at their homepage or email - locate tram from www.visitnorway.com ) have some.
Some of the big places are:

http://www.novasol.com/

I am glad that you talk begiining af June - for late June, July, beginning August you are 4-6 month too late.

Thank you for the advise and links; I'll take a look at them. The suggestion of the lighthouse is very good, but it's probably a bit beyond our budget.

Touristy: My definition for touristy is on the exaggerated side of the spectra. I spent most of my childhood summer vacations on a ranch without electricity or phone, and were we got our water supply out of a well using a bucket. The neighbors were at least a kilometer away, and the nearest town 40 km along muddy roads. If it rained for a few days you were quite likely to get stuck in a couple stretches of the road, and the car had to be pulled out by a tractor or a horse! Now I'm in Europe, and was looking to take a quiet break for a few days (hikking, fishing, etc welcome). The fjords are reminiscent of those vacations on the southamerican pampas, albeit with a nicer landscape I must admit.
