Hi,

we're planning a roadtrip through southwestern norway and we want to take the ferry at least once. So we're currently contemplating either to take the ferry from stavanger to bergen or the ferry from bergen to alesund and fly the respective other trip to save some time.

Which of the two ferries ride would you consider more beautiful and which would you recommend we take? We'll be going to norway end of april/early may.

I think generally speaking the most scenic ferries are the ones that go in the fjords and not necessarily the ones along the coast as you propose to do.

I also would not consider alesund as being in the south. I would thus recomened you chose to do either the northern fjords or the southern fjords. For the northern fjords an idea would be to take the ferry to flam, ferry to Gudvangen and back. Ferry to Leikanger. Rent a car, drive luster-lom-northern road-geirangerfjord (dalsnibba viewpoint is a must)-trollstigen-alesund. Obviously splitting it up. The glacier near luster in magnificent. We did a kayak trip to it followed by some glacier walking. And the roads as described are incredible.

Have never been to the south but I am sure its also great.

Hi m_schwarz,

I guess I should have been more detailed. ;)

We are of course planning to go into the fjords. we have planned 1-2 days close to stavanger to visit the preikestolen, 3-4 days around bergen to see flam, gudvangen, voss and voringfossen and then want to go up to alesund to visit geiranger and, if we have the time, the nordfjord.
The question is more how to connect these different stops best. Unfortunately we do not have a driving license, so renting a car is out of question. :/ Do you know if there are bus connections from luster to geiranger? Dalsnibba would have been an excursion we wanted to do either way, but we had planned to visit it from geiranger and not on the way to geiranger as all information we have found so far said that the only entrance by public transport into geiranger is cmoing from alesund (but our research can well be flawed).

Unfortunately we're not visiting at the right time of the year to do a glacier hike (nor kayaking, I would think.. but we'll see how cold it really is once we get there). We have contacted the tourist office of jostedalbreen and they told us that this early in the year glacier hikes were out of question, but we were welcome to spend a day skiing there or snow shoeing. Their season starts on june 15th, more than a month after we leave norway.

thanks for your suggestions, we'll definitely try to make this happen! :)

The ferry (Hurtigruten) from Bergen to Ålesund I'd say is the best, and in summer it takes a side trip into Geiranger before returning to Ålesund. There is a bus south from Geiranger but only in summer. The ferry to Hellesylt is probably also only in summer.

The trip from Stavanger to Bergen is nothing special.

Hi,

thanks very much for these very detailed informations! :) I think we'll be taking the ferry from Bergen to Alesund in this case and try to find cheap flights from bergen to stavanger and back.

Do you know when the ferries from Bergen to Alesund leave in may? I've had a look at the schedule of fjord1, but it ends at the 30th April and I can't find out which company does the router after that. :/

Fjord1 is the speedboat, I couldn't find any info when I tried to search on a day in summer. Maybe they're very picky about specifying the exactly correct start and stop.

Anyway, Hurtigruten is a bit slower but probably what you want for the scenery. :-) In summer, it leaves Bergen at 20:00 and arrives Ålesund 8:45 the next morning. So of course you'll miss some of the scenery at night. After going in to Geiranger, it returns to Ålesund again at 17:45.

Hi "m",

I like your suggestion of car trip route, but aren't there huge fees for dropping off in a different place (or did I misinterpret, and your trip is a loop)?

Cheers,

Nigel
