Hi,

My partner and I will be spending about 1 and a half weeks in Norway in mid June this summer (like 13-23). We love backcountry hiking, and we were hoping to spend part of our time in Norway doing a 3 or 4 day hike. After reading about the national parks like Jutenheimen we were very excited.

However everything I have read indicates that hiking is not feasible during this time - that everything is closed, there is snow everywhere (we don't want to freeze or hike through snow - our tent is only 3-season). Plus it sounds like buses don't run to Jutenheimen until late June.

Is there anyplace we can hike in Norway during this time? Ideally we want to be able to string together a 3 or 4 day hike, but if we have to, we can settle for setting up camp and doing day hikes out from there.
I would love to see glaciers and/or glacial lakes - that is part of what drew us to Jutenheimen in the first place.

A final option - and maybe not possible - is to go someplace we could cross-country ski instead of hike. But it sounds like in early/mid June it is too snowy to hike and too melty to ski :(

Any suggestions would be very welcome - we are trying to plan this very quickly as our original plans to honeymoon in Thailand got suddenly canceled due to the political situation! Many thanks in advance!

A good link for hiking in Norway, there's a network of trails and catered huts run by http://www.turistforeningen.no/english/

I don't so much need links to hike ideas or trails, but rather an idea of if it's possible to hike in early to mid June without a lot of snow?

Sorry if I didn't make that clear in my first post. What I need to know most is - is hiking feasible in early to mid June?

For instance, one of the hikes suggested in a link above is on Rondane:
http://turistforeningen.no/english/trip.php?tp_id=4373&fo_id=3987

But from what i've read, Rondane isn't accessible or hike-able (depending on what source i'm looking at) until July. Pretty similar with Jotunheimen. Is that information accurate, or those areas indeed be hiked in June?

Thanks!

It is true that areas like Rondane, Jotunheimen and Hardangervidda probably still have snow, or are really wet as the snow is in the process of melting.. Early June might still be good enough for skiing in those areas.

I am sorry I don't have any good ideas for nice hikes in lower areas.. allthough I am sure it exists :)

Try the Stryn area. I haven't been there myself, but it looks nice on their website.

On another forum I saw this area suggested for hiking around middle of May. So should also be good in June!
Area Gausdal Vestfjell, also known as Huldreheimen:

Here are some pictures from the area:

Whereever you go in the mountains it will probably be very wet grounds, snow has not melted completely yet. Late May it is still possible to ski in certain areas. Use the 'turistforeningen' link to find info.

There are hiking areas out west that with a bit of fortunate weather could be accessible and in pretty good shape at this time. Places like Sunnmøre, Sunnfjord, Ytre Sogn. Turistforeningen, again, is your best bet for up-to-date info.
