We are a party of four elderly people from SOUTH AFRICA planning a trip TO SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS :
Landing in OSLO , fly to KIRKENESS , CRUISE with HURTIGRUTEN to BERGEN - then via train to OSLO where we will stay 4 days.

Can you recommend clothes to pack for this round trip ? Any hints would be appreciated .

We will be there from Feb 16 till 02 March 2013.

Silk long johns, both tops and bottoms. They layer under anything without adding a lot of bulk and they are nice against the skin.

Long down coats to keep your thighs warm.

Well insulated boots, maybe pretty tall ones so they cover where your coat doesn't. Thick wool socks, the loopy kind, not the flat kind. They are warmer and more cushioned.

Between the inside and the outside wear layers. A T-shirt, turtleneck, and a polar fleece on top. Thicker long-johns, wool pants and wind pants not he bottom, or insulated ski pants and you can skip some of the layers on the bottom.

Good scarf, hat and gloves are essential.

Stay warm!

Hi

And as you might are able to understand from Caryatid's advise: dress in layers (e.g. long johns, socks/wool socks, pants/ski-pants, t-shirt/turtleneck/fleece, coat)... Each layer will isolate, so you will be better protected from the cold, plus it gives you the option to loose some layers when the weather's mild or you are active, and but them back on when the weather turns for the worse...

Bring some kind rucksack or small backpack as well for keeping extra layers and a termo of coffee (maybe with some alcohol) for extra warmth...

You have unfortunately chosen a period when the moon will be bright in the sky for much of the time - full moon is 25 Feb, and in the week or so leading up to the full moon, a bright moon is in the sky for much of the time that people are usually awake. In the event that you get clear enough skies to see the aurora, you might have to keep unusual hours to find the brief periods when the moon is out of the sky, if you are trying to see weaker aurora.

Hi Levinia,
As a fellow South African I thought I might respond to your post. My wife and I took the Hurtigruten from Bergen to Kirkeness and back some 12 years ago. We went in mid-summer in the hopes of seeing the midnight sun which we eventually did - on the return trip when we spent a few days (the break did mean a change of ship, but no extra cost) on the Lofoten Islands. We were on the smallest ship of the fleet (the Lofoten) and spent most of our time on deck outside - but even in mid-summer it was very cold and we wore almost all our clothes and then wrapped a couple of blankets around us too. You will probably be on one of the big modern ships and be inside most of the time so you will probably not find is as cold. Do not bargain on seeing the Aurora - if you do see it, consider it the cherry on top. We participated on many (not all) of the excursions, which, although expensive, were well worth while. They were most enjoyable.
Have a great trip. It will be fabulous.
