I'd like to visit Northern Norway in June and am considering renting a campervan. We've done this elsewhere and given the high cost of hotels and eating out in Norway I'm wondering if its a good option? I was thinking of flying to Tromso then either heading North or to the Lofoten Islands. Are there camp sites and whats the situation regarding stopping in lay-by's, by the roadside etc?. Any advice appreciated.

There are many campsites, and you can also find informal places to stop, though a degree of responsibility should be exercised. There are very many campervan touring in Norway in summer, but a large fraction have German/Dutch/etc plates.

Obviously I don't know what you were expecting, and what kind of a budget you had in mind, but I think you might find hiring a campervan in northern Norway surprisingly expensive. The way to really save money in Norway is to camp in a tent.

Another budget option in Norway is to rent the simple cabins found on many campsites. Typically they need booking some time in advance, I've rarely found them still available when turning up on spec. And quite a lot insist on full week rents. Though in June maybe it would be easier.
