We will be in Bergen during late August 2013. We are looking for a budget hotel/place to stay and would like to keep the cost to between $100 and $125.

My questions:

1) Is it possible to get a room with a private bath in that price range?
2) Is my price range realistic - prices in Bergen seem quite high.
3) Any recommendations?

A room in a private residence will be OK even if there is no private bath but I want to avoid a large hotel if there is no private bath and we try to avoid traditional 4 or more to a room hostels.

Any info will be appreciated.

You can get a double room at the Marken Hostel for that price...shared bath, but a nice enough room and hostel.

Prices in Bergen are certainly not cheap ;-)

I think it is also on hostelworld if you want to see some reviews and other information.....

Have you tried to look at the obvious place: http://www.visitbergen.com/en/WHERE-TO-STAY/ this will give you the best overview.
Since you tell prices for Europe in "$" without telling which kind I guess you are from the US! Then note that many hotels (most) outside the very lowest and very top-end range will include a BIG breakfast buffet in the price (will be in the lists and on hotels homepage - but often not told very clearly as it is simply the norm) - this will for 2 have a 20-40USD value, so that may reduce the "room-alone"-price considerably relative to the number you read.
All this said - USD 100 for a (2 person??) room is VERY little in Scandinavia - and especially of course in Norway.

USD 100 seems quite low. With the current exchange rate, western-Europe is more expensive than the US and Norway is even the most expensive country in Europe (together with Switzerland). I've been to Bergen last year and paid 130 euro (=170 USD) per night for a two person room with a private bathroom. This was one of the cheapest options in/around the city centre.

Have a look at e.g. www.booking.com or www.hotels.com to get an idea of the prices in Bergen in August.

Thanx all.

I will be paying in US dollars or will convert US dollars to local currency.

I looked at a couple of the suggested web sites before I posted my question on Thorn Tree. I thought other travelers might know of hotels that are not listed in booking.com, kayak.com, the visit Bergen site etc. I figured it was worth a try.

As for Marken House, I am aware of it but saw some not so good reviews. Can anyone share their thoughts on that hotel?

Prices are quite high in Bergen compared to the rest of Norway and rooms are in shorter supply in the summer months as self and GF found out int he summer of 2011.

One chain that reduces its prices over the summers months is the Thon Hotel chain. We've stayed in Bergen (Thon Rosenkrantz?) that's near Bryggen in 2005 and in others at Arendal and Oslo in 2011 - the latter were part of the reduced price promotions that Thon implemented over that summer.

All were clean, comfortable with ensuite and had a decent breakfast spread plus free coffee and internet access too. The last place we used in Bergen wasn't a Thon, was rather pricey and didn't come with breakfast either - an independent rather than a chain! Have visited Norway 11 times now and there's only two hotel rooms that I've stayed in which had a bath in a bathroom by the way - showers are more commonly found, although some have been along the corridor and around the corner in a couple of places...

Good place to eat in Bergen is Pygmalion near what was the old tourist information hall - small place that is next to the central YMCA.

Bergen Card is a worthwhile purchase if you're visiting museums and using public transport, but walking around is the best way to see Bergen (apart from a trip up the Floibanen funicular railway - great way to see the city spread out below you, especially around dusk).

Citybox Hotel is pretty cheap and cheerful. Rooms can be had for around 400NOK which is about €55.

We have been to Bergen several times, and we have found that Hotels seem to be more affordable out on the peninsula, to the West of the city centre.
