Hi,

I have an opportunity to go to Bergen for a couple of days at the end of October.
I would love to see Norways famous fjords.
I know my time is limited but i don't mind long busy days covering a lot of ground.

Day 1 Arrive at Bergen airport late
Day 2 & Day 3 Myrdal,Flam,Sognefjord. Fly out of Bergen evening Day 3.

What is the best way to make the most of my time and see the best scenary?
Should i rent a car?
Maybe I can take a boat up the Fjords and come back by train?

Any advise on putting this together/buying tickets appreciated.

Thanks

I found a boat that runs from Bergen to Flam but it doesn't seem to run at the end of October, www.fjord1.no.
I guess maybe this only runs in the summer.
However I see I can take an express boat from Bergen to Sogndal for 585. Problem with that is its an evening boat so not good for enjoying the views.
Now if I look at the opposite route Sogndal to Bergen express boat runs in the morning.
I'm thinking maybe I could go by train Day 2 and come back the morning of Day 3 using this express boat.

Ok here is what I have figured out

1st Day:
Train for 449 Krone (http://www.nsb.no)
Bergen 10:28 Myrdal 12:20
Myrdal 13:00 Flam 13:51

Bus
Flam 18:35 Sogndal 20:15

Overnight hotel in Sogndal

2nd Day:
Express Boat 585Krone (www.fjord1.no)
Sogndal 07:05 Bergen 11:50

Afternoon: Fløibanen Funicular in Bergen

Now I'd like your thoughts on the itinerary and if I'll get to see some nice scenary?

I was going to suggest the funicular. It doesn't take long, and the view is spectacular. If you buy the tickets at the TI (a short walk from the funicular station), you won't have to wait in a long line.

see the best scenary

Bear in mind that staying for just 3 days in late October, you might see nothing at all. It isn't unusual for it to rain more or less continuously for 3 days in late October in that part of Norway. About 250mm of rain falls in Bergen in that month, and it doesn't come in brief heavy downpours...

The Norway in a Nutshell tour is popular.

Hey, thanks a lot guys for the tips.

@davanden: good feedback I'll definitely do this
@iviehoff: Being from Ireland I know all about that kind of weather :). I guess I'll just have to take a chance. I suppose no matter what time of year you go it could be the same. When weather closes in like that is there anything to see at all?
@fluffy_bunny: Thanks for that link, so it looks like they buy the tickets for you instead of getting them individually. I see they do the loop from Bergen to Flam in one day.

Hey, I live in Bergen and if you think you know rain, then wait until you get here:) Imagine standing in a shower in wellies and a gum jacket and gum trousers: that's exactly what it's like. But not to put you off, Bergen is beautiful and they say there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. So invest in a quality raincoat and a pair of waterproof boots before boarding the plane.

As a person who's absolutely in love with Bergen, think of Fløien as a starting point for some spectacular hiking trails, not as a destination. Take the Fløibanen (the funicular) up if you must but walk back down: it takes only about 30-40 minutes.
From Fløien, you can easily go up to mount Rundemannen and Blåmannen (a 4-year-old can do it) which takes about 3-4 hours both ways. If you're feeling more adventurous, you could also go hiking from mount Ulriken (there's a mountain lift that can take you there, called Ulriksbanen) to Fløien which takes about 4-6 hours. I've done it during one of those rainy days and it was still beautiful. Plus, if you go on a Saturday, a cosy mountain hut might be open.

You could also stay in town and see the touristy stuff like the fish market, Bryggen (do go inside!) and there are a couple of museums worth seeing: the maritime museum, for example, is nice: http://www.bsj.uib.no/

Wander around Bergen harbour area around sunset and the lighting's wonderful for photography, especially if it's hitting Bryggen.

Floibanen after dark is magical too...

Pygmalion's a good place to eat if you have some spare cash, but be alert when you're crossing the road as there were a few electric cars on the city's roads. Good for the environment, but silent!

Hi,
I too am going to Bergen at what sounds like the same time as you for the same amount of time.
I was looking at doing the Norway in a Nutshell tour on the Saturday and then spending Sunday exploring Bergen,
but I am now afraid (after reading these replies) of spending all that money on the tour if I am unable to see anything if it rains.
