Hi,
we are planning a round trip in the second half of april, starting from Elverum. We will be 2, 3 or 4 people. We are going to use public transport (or to hitchhike if possible) and sleep in hostels, cabins or in a tent. Our rough plan is: Elverum - Oslo - (Myrdal - Flam and back) - Bergen (by train) - Maloy (by boat) - Geirangerfjord (bus) - Jotunheimen - Elverum. And the questions are:
1) How will the weather be in those parts of Norway?
2) Are some hostels in the cities going to be open? Or do you know about another cheap accommodation?
3) Is it worth to explore Jotunheimen a bit in the middle of april?
4) What the prices are for travelling?
We don`t want to make a big mistake before a more detailed plan and actually if you have some completely new ideas we would be glad for them.
Thank you for your time

1) Weather is generally (and relatively) dry and stable at this time of year; but summer is not yet there so temperatures are generally moderate. On the west coast (Bergen-Måløy) there is often unpredictable rain.
2) Youth hostels may still be closed for the winter, but in Bergen I guess YMCA is open all year.
3) No. Jotunheimen only accessible skiing, but some roads on the perimeter may be open.
4) Depends on means of transport and type of tickets (NSB trains have some cheap tickets, so do the low cost airlines). 4 people together will not get a lift hitchhiking, max 2.
Note: The ferry to Geiranger from May 1, and the Geiranger road is open from mid May. Only access to Geiranger village is by "Eagles highway" (very nice drive). From Maløy it takes some time to get to Geiranger by bus because it is across the main routes. Perhaps go to Ålesund first?
