My boyfriend and I are looking to go to Iceland in July. We'd like to spend a couple of nights in Rek and then want to hire a car and drive to West iceland/peninsula to do some exploring. Can anyone suggest the best place to use as a base in West Iceland? We are going for a week and don't want to do too much driving as would rather be out hiking etc. Is it feasible to do the West Fjords as well in the same trip (we are planning on going for a week)?

Any suggestions or tips would be great.

Iceland. A place I always wanted to go to for the tales of Northern Lights, Glaciers, Fjords, Volcanos and erupting geysers but always disregarded because of tales of it being too expensive and stories of £12 for a pint of beer, £100+ a night for a hotel etc

Well now just like everywhere the UK where I am included the economy has gone crazy.

A quick search shows there is 177 ISK = £1.00 GBP

In Reykjavik I can get a private single room for as low as £30 which is what 5300 ISK. Dorm beds for…

I am going to Iceland in late February and am hoping to hire a car to go to the Reykjavik, Blue Lagoon, Gulfoss and Geysir areas. There are of course many websites with varying cars and prices, but what I want to know is would a simple car like a Corsa do to go up to Geysir etc at that time of year, or will we need something more robust? I assume the rental company wouldn't be stupid enough to provide an unsuitable car (ie for going out of Reykjavik and into higher areas), but wanted to check.

hello

i deeply want to visit iceland. it is my dream. i was trying to think of a way i may be able to get there 1) without flying and 2) on a budget the length of a shoestring.

i wondered if i could get work on a ferry boat?
or if many people sailed that way, if i could perhaps get a job helping them?

i live in england, in bristol. i am thinking of hitching to the nearest ferry point, however long this will take i don't know but it doesnt bother me :)

does anyone know how much the boat costs?

I travel with a Snow Peak Gigapower backpacking stove which uses an isobutane/propane fuel. I have checked websites for international fuel names, but do not know if I can buy this fuel in Iceland. Does anyone know if this type of fuel is available?
Thanks!

Hello

i have a week in mid February to travel and was thinking iceland may be an interesting place to go. I know nothing about what to do there or where to stay with a budget and would really appreciate some advice.

Are there hostels to stay in and if so which are the good ones..?
What are the good day trips to take around iceland?
What clothing should i take as im sure its going to bloody cold!
Is it expensive to travel there on the pound at the moment?

Any reponse would be greatly appreciated

Akureyri

I am planning a trip in July and (I'll be alone but doing a group tour.. The Viking Challenge) I also want to see Akureyri. I'll be adding a trip to Grimsey from Reykjavik at the start of my trip and wanted to get to Akureyri early and see some of the sights there before going on to Grimsey. Is there transportation/ buses from the Akureyri airport into town? It looks like it's not too far to walk though.

I have a LP guide book and saw a few things I'd be interested in seeing. Although I am…

I will be in Iceland for about a month in July. Planning on trekking plus driving the Ring Road (Route 1). I note on Iceland roadmap that parts of Route 1 are not paved. As a woman travelling alone, I'm wondering if I need a 4X4 to drive the Ring Road. I'm not planning on driving the interior; will take public transport or guided tours for that.

Thanks for the help!

Hi

I am doing a trek through the Sprengisandur this summer, and some of it will be off-route. Does anyone know where I can get/hire a locator beacon, in case something goes wrong?

cheers
