Hello All,

My husband and I are planing to drive ring road in August, mostly couchsurfing and camping, but I've noticed on my map that there are long stretches without campsites, particularly when you leave the south of Iceland. How are the mountain huts used? Do they cost? Do you have to book ahead? Is it first come-first served availability? Are there many huts at each location?

Thanks for any info!

My husband and I will be visiting Iceland from August 26 through August 31, 2010. We'll be visiting the following places:

The Blue Lagoon, The Golden Circle, Landmannalaugar, Skaftafell, & Jokulsarlon.

We plan to rent a 4WD. If anyone is interested in sharing the cost of the rental car with us, please let me know. We were going to take the bus but the bus fares in Iceland are ridiculously high (it is almost as much as renting a car).

Does anyone know if you can do the Thorsmork to Skogar hike this season? I don't know if the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull has made it unsafe or unpassable. We've done some hiking in this area a few years back and would like to maybe do the Landmannalaugar hike and continure right to Skogafoss. Planning on the very beginning of September. Any info or links appreciated as I can't seem to find any up to date trail conditions.

Hi, I am going to visit iceland by bus and camping around the ring road for about 3 weeks in August. Does anyone know if a tent with floor material of 210T polyester, 3000mm PU and fly material of 190T polyester, 1500mm PU is enough to cope with Iceland's rainy weather?
Thanks.

I have tried doing a search about this and nothing. If I where to put my car on the ferry from Denmark to Iceland are there any taxes on it when I disembark? If so what are they.

I quite like the idea of using the ferry as it means we could stop of in the faroe island on the way or on the way back.
Any thoughts.

Thanks

Malcolm

hey i heard a few months ago that they were trying to build a trail up to the fissure of the volcano...has anyone heard anything about it and how far off the laugavagur it will be?
also, is it safe to leave up your tent for the day at the reykjavik campsite or are there storage lockers somewhere to keep my backpack, etc, while travelling around town?
thank you for your time

Hi,

I would be interested in sharing a car for a week between the 28th of July and 7th of August with someone who is also planning on visiting Iceland, backpacking, camping and hopefully getting out to the more dramatic and wild landscapes. I am planning to do this anyway by bus and hitchikking, but I thought that if someone out there was planning to do the same perhaps it would be more practical and fun to share a car.

I am also keen on trekking, and will probably do a trek either after or…

Whenever I travel I like to read some books about the country I'm travelling in to learn about the history and to get a sense of the people.

Does anyone have any suggestions for books about Iceland, particularly anything about the recent financial upheaval, which will help me learn more than the guidebooks touch on?

Thanks.

Laundry?

I'm traveling to Reykjavik next month and will need to do some laundry while I'm there. I'm not sure that my hotel has this service available at an affordable cost. Are there any self-service laundromats around?

I'm staying east of the city center but I'm willing to walk or bus a good distance if necessary to do laundry.

Hi,
on august 5th I will arrive in Iceland for a 2 week motorbiketrip. I want to explore the ring road as well as some interior roads. In theorie, I (and the machine) can tackle fords up to 60cm deep or so... It's an enduro motorcycle.

Can you give me advice on the most beautifull roads in Iceland? Best views, most exciting parts? ...

Oh, by the way ... If there are other (solo) motorists around here, maybe we can drive together some time!
