My husband and I visited Iceland this June and spent time in the South and the West. We are going to return next year and rent a campervan and spend 2 weeks mostly in the Westfjords and the North. Is May too early to visit this part of the country? Do the roads in the westfjords close seasonally?
http://www.vegagerdin.is/english/road-conditions-and-weather/ save this link, it tells you actual road conditions in Iceland, maybe you can get an idea how it looks in winter and what roads do get closed and make your decision then.
The west fjords don't get closed off like the interior, but some roads might be impassable, I loved Iceland in June, if you decide to go then try to be in Reykjavik on the 17th.
Most of the roads should be open but this is good to know that the service for the Summer (campsites, larger opening hours in restaurants, swimming pools, museums, ... ) do not start the 1st of May. I would recommend to go there late May/beginning of June if possible to visit this beautiful region.

Do the roads in the westfjords close seasonally?
There's a handful of minor roads that close seasonally, and the most remote don't reopen until July, but it isn't much of a restriction - there's a short cut from Isafjardardjup to the south coast called Kollafjardarheidi or near equivalent, that's very late to reopen, but it's a pretty terrible road; also the far northern ends of the roads up the east side of Isafjardardjup and the Strandir (east) coast can be a bit slow to reopen, but you can get to the main places in those areas. Additionally, any of the roads can close intermittently after recent wintry weather. Those intermissions can be of a few weeks deep into the winter (Bildudalur gets cut off for a few weeks from time to time), but are usually only of a day or two in spring if a heavy snowfall occurs.
There's some similar issues in the central north also, - spring snowfalls are the biggest risk in the NE - (I've seen a photo of Husavik under two metres of snow following a late May fall one year, but that doesn't happen so often) but most of the time you can get to just about everywhere of tourist interest in the north, except the uninhabited interior, in spring.

Thanks everyone, I think we will push it to early June if possible. Can't wait to come back!

According to long term averages, you actually get better weather in May, colder, but sunnier and drier. Of course you can be unlucky and get a wet week any time.

Yes, I pretty much expect to have some clouds and rain while there regardless. Normally I find grey skies depressing but in Iceland I felt like they added to the dramatic landscapes a lot of the time. My favorite place we went was Fjadrargljufur Canyon which we visited on a grey and drizzly day and I feel like that was part of what made it so great. I think in the sun I wouldnt have appreciated it as much as I did. But 2 weeks of grey sky and rain might be a little too much! Oh well I can't control the weather so I'll take my chances.
i would recommend you June... My grandmother is from there and I use to spend time in summer
Thats my opinion :)

Obviously June would in all likelihood be better but I would have thought the vast majority of roads would be open in May, but as someone said definitley bookmark the vegagerdin site. I When I went to the Westfjords I took the car ferry from Stykkisholmur and spent 2-3 days just in the south western part. So much to see, but bear in mind travel on the roads is exceptionally slow! Rauðasandur, Latrabjarg, Dynjandi are all amazing. If you´re looking to rent a campervan I would do it as soon as you can. I recommend these guys
