I'm not sure if anyone has noticed this, but Smyril Lines have cancelled the ferry link from Scrabster to Seydisfjordur (and Bergen) for 2009. I think this means that the only way to get a vehicle to Iceland from the UK is now Harwich to Denmark and then Denmark to Seydisfjordur.

Curiously there seems to be no plain statement of this on their website, though I have tracked down this cancellation announcement from one of their agents.

I looked at their site a couple of weeks back, and didn't work this out. There was reference to a modified 2009 sailing schedule, which when you look at it shows no calls at Bergen and Scrabster. But their catalogue still shows the "more detailed" timetable which includes such calls, and they still show a price list for these destinations. Sounds like a bit of chaos then.

I observe that they sacked their CEO a week before this announcement, and in effect admitted that they are losing money. I think they are suffering badly from the low-cost airlines, which make flying and hiring a car a much stronger proposition.
