We will be arriving in Reykjavik on March 26th and departing April 3rd. We are thinking of spending two nights in Reykjavik, renting a car and driving to Stykkisholmur, staying for 2 nights to visit sites in the area, leaving to do the Golden Circle and then spending a night in Selfoss, then on to Skaftafell for two nights to see the sights, including Jokulsarlon, etc, heading back and staying in Selfoss or Hveragerdi for our last night and then driving to the Blue Lagoon before heading home.

Would love your thoughts on this plan?

Also, all the tours we are finding start in Reykjavik. Are there tours to the Landmannalagur and other areas that begin in or around Skaftafell?

Thanks for your input.

heading back and staying in Selfoss

Selfoss is a working town. You may prefer to stay almost anywhere else.

Also, all the tours we are finding start in Reykjavik.

That's because it's Still Winter and the vast majority of the winter tourists are in Reykjavik. April is Still Winter in Iceland. Of course you can arrange to meet the tours on the way out of R if you are somewhere on the way. There are some local winter tours in the Skaftafell area, though doing anything like going back west to L..r is unlikely, though I realise they do that in summer. I don't know if you'll be too late for ice cave hunting tours that run around Skaftafell, they rely on travelling on winter-frozen lakes so they can't run as late as some winter activities, maybe at that time in the season they can't even say in advance until they see what is happening.

You are proposing quite a lot of driving (especially bearing in mind you are thinking of whole-day tours on top like going to Landmannalaugar), which would be fair enough in the summer, but in winter you need to be a bit more modest in your ambitions, or at least keep a weather eye on the risks. It's Still Winter and heavy snowfall is still fairly frequent, though, as in midwinter, milder wet weather is also possible. You need to keep a bit of time in hand to get back to Reykjavik in case a heavy snowfall delays you a day or something. Of course you may get there and find the roads perfectly clear and the forecast quite clear there is no risk of anything nasty in the foreseeable. Keep an eye on http://www.vegagerdin.is/english and http://en.vedur.is/

Your itinerary is good but as has been pointed out it involves a lot of driving and does not leave much time for whole day tours. Also there probably won´t be any boat tours in Jökusarlon (the website says April but doesnt specify when in April)

Thank you both. We are re-thinking the driving and doing any full day tours. Another question, I just read that we should avoid a 4 wheel drive because the wind can be a problem and because of the height of the 4 wheel drive, it can cause a problem. Do you agree?

It it nuts (economy!! And comfort) to rent a 4WD unless you are going places where it is a must. Most of such places are only accessible for tourists in July august.

Hi! As for the tours, I suggest the following: http://www.landmannalaugartours.com/#!day-tour-winter-landmannalaugar/c14ku
In this period of time it is better to avoid gravels, so you won't need a 4x4.

Perfect, will not add the expense of the 4 x4. Thank you
