We are 3 guys loaning a car for a week on Iceland. I was wondering is it possible to get to Landmannalauger in an ordinary car at the moment? According to Lonely Planet it is sometimes possible in the summer, but it depends on the water level.

You have to leave the car before the campsite and walk 200 meters to skip the river at the campsite.
It's possible but prohibited for "ordinary" rented cars. So you risk to get high bill if caught. ALL "F" roads are prohibited for "ordinary". So you'll have to rent a "jeep" or take a bus. You could try to get a deal from car rental - like taking cheapest 4x4 - Russian Hummer aka Lada Sport aka Niva for this trip. Or maybe for the whole trip - then you can go anywhere.

Does that mean you have to go back the same way to avoid the rivers? Our plan was to come from west (Reykjavik and Golden Circle) and continue to the east (Skaftafell).

We are not renting a car, but loaning one from someone we know in Iceland.
the road going from landmannalaugar to the east has several river crossings. They're quite low this year compared to last year but they're still definitely not the kind of thing you can do in a regular car, especially if you still want to remain friends with these people who're lending it to you.
You should ask the nice people who are lending you a car, if they are Ok. with you taking it to Landmannalaugar. I would not allow anyone to do that in my regular 2WD.
And yes you have to take the same way back, to avoid river fording, no way around it.

I have a similar question -- How difficult is the drive to Landmannalaugar from the west, then continue on to Vik?
Do you recommend F225 or F26+F208?
I will be renting a Lada Niva and driving in early August.

Take F225 - much better views and no problem for Niva.

Vik is to the south-west from Landmannalaugar "across" Myrdalsjokull.
But the drive shouldn't be a problem...well depending on your experience of course. I mean whether you're used to highways only or drive unpaved country roads all the time.
You can see by yourself what you can see overthere. The story starts from Skogafoss and ends at Landmannalaugar. Then it goes across highlands, passes Vik etc.
