Helo,

My boyfriend and I will travel trough Iceland for 21 days in July, with public transport, starting in Reykjavik, walk from Landmannalaugar- Thórsmörk, pass Skogar, Vik, Skafatafell NP, Vatnajökull, Jökusárlon, Höfn, Egilsstadir, Mývatn, Walk Dettifoss-Asbyrgi, visit Husavik, go back to Reykjavik trough the interior via Akureyri.

I was thinking to rent a car for next little trip (a normal car for 2 days) (starting from Reykjavik):

Pass by Nesjavellir to go to Thinvellir N.P. and Thingvellirvatn.
Take road 37 to Laugarvatn-shellir and maybe drive to Brúarfoss (and walk the last 3 km),
Drive to Geysir, Strokkur and Gulfoss.
Maybe pass by Brúarhlöd (I should use this special sign): I don't know about that road conditions?
Go back on road 35 to pass Kerid and drive to Hveragerodi (overnight there or maybe earlier...we'll see)
Visit Raufarhólshellir, a part of Reykjanes (Krýsuvik/urberg)
and back to Reykjavik.

I have 2 questions about this trip:
Is this trip possible in two days by car? (with google earth I estimate about 240 km)
Is it possible with a normal car (and not a 4 weel driving car)? It would be a big difference in price.

Thanks a lot!

It´s easy.
The Golden circle from R.vik to Hveragerdi, as you are going to do it is 210 Km. and a good slow day.
The Reykjanes peninsula, (with a visit to Raufarhólshellir cave) is about 150 Km. and is easy to do in one day.
So two days are plenty.
B-)

It's NOT easy!

It's VERY easy! :)))))

Possible in one day but I guess you want not just "take a look" but be able to stop and enjoy the place - so two days better. And yes - "regular" car is enough.
But if I were you I would do a car tour first - with fresh eyes ;-)

with this itinerary I'd also suggest a quick stop on the black sand beaches east of thorlakshofn (I think it's route 34? Stop at the restaurant called blaa hafid and walk down). The beaches are beautifully wide and empty, and if you're not going on any south coast bus tours, it'll give you a flavour.

Hi,

Thanks for all the usefull and quick answers!

Many car rental companies seemed to be full booked,
Cheap Jeep has cheap offers, I think I'll book there this weekend (any experiences?)

Thanks!

CheepJeep should be okay. One of the new car rental companies that finally offering good used cars at reasonable price instead of brand new at crazy prices.
And for two days around Gold circle - no need to worry at all (it's not a highland tour on super-jeep - they brake there even if new).

Hi,

I've booked! For 2 days, in the beginning of our trip, by cheap jeep for 154 euro (economy car :-) ). Thanks for the recommendation!
I'm really dreaming every day about our trip trough Iceland.

Hi everyone,

If sombody is planning the same trip with an "economy car": the car rental company won't let you do that!

I have to pay 70 euro's more for the cheapest 4WD car (about 230 euros, so still ok comparing to others). The insurance is not ok with a 2WD because of the grazel on the roads.
Anyway, the freedom and silence is more worth than 70 euros, the organized bus tours are also very expensive I think, so the car will be worth his price!

Gravel roads and unpaved roads are not the same.
So what did you ask for then, rooman? ;-)
Golden circle and Reykjanes should be "safe" for any car...
But on the other hand silence and freedom worth something :-)

Ok, maybe they try to make money on (or at? doesn't matter) us,
but I believe them when they say we may have troubles with the insurance...

Anyway, spend some money might help Iceland economy :-), too bad that the euro is less worth every week :-§,

You live in Iceland, isn't it? I'm really looking forward to visit Iceland!
