I'll be visiting Iceland in a few weeks and have hotel reservations for a few nights in Skogar, mainly because I couldn't get reservations in Vik. Since Skogar is so close to the volcano, is it ok to stay there? Is the area covered with ash? What is the air quality like?

Thanks!

Few days ago Skogar didn't look very well

This image is from Skogar itself (if you don't want to read the full story).

BUT. Nobody knows what the situation will be in a few weeks from now. What hotel did you book btw? I would contact them by e-mail and just ask a simple question "Do you have plan B for situation of ash fall?"
And for sure I would come here in any case! ;-)

At least to be able to see the Eyja-Fjalla-Jokull by yourself

Thanks for the info! I'm supposed to stay at the Hotel Edda Skogar. What were the conditions like in Vik? I'm definitely still planning to come and am planning an alternate itinerary on the northern coast just in case. I'm worried that if the itinerary has to change, it will be difficult to find affordable lodging on the fly... Has tourism to Iceland been impacted by the volcano?

Conditions in Vik can be found at Civil Defense cite

You should really talk to Edda hotels chain and ask what they can offer in case of ash problems at Skogar.
Keep in mind that it's less than 2 hours drive from Reykjavik to that place.
On the other hand it's hard to get better price than at Edda (with same level of accommodation).

It's OK as long as volcano is turned off ;-)
