Hello,

We are going to Iceland for six days in September and are looking for any information that we can get regarding places to see, sleep, eat etc.
Day 1 arrive in Reykjavik, Day 2 head towards Vik, Day 3 head towards Hoefn, Day 4 head toweards Skogar, Day 5 head towards Stykkisholmur area and Day 6 back to Reykjavik.

We are renting a car so any hints would be appreciated.

Don't go as far as Hofn, unless you were specially wanting to eat in the expensive gourmet restaurants there. Otherwise turn around at Jokulsarlon, and stay somewhere further back on your way towards Skogar, keep the driving down.

There's not a huge number of places to stay in Iceland, and if you are going in early Sept it will probably still be heavily booked along the southern shore. Later in the month, you'll be freer to choose what you want.

A huge number of threads already discuss these areas on the forum, as they are the most popular tourist areas in Iceland, so search the forum and see what you find.

We spent 2 nights in Reykjavik and 2 nights in Skogar in June, and found Skogar to be a great base for our Southeastern adventures. I'd highly recommend doing a glacier hike or ice climbing. That would be a 3 hour drive east from Skogar, and we went with Glacier Adventures for a ~4 hour tour. Best day of the entire trip, and you won't regret it. Also stopped at Jokulsarlon Lagoon on the way back home that night, which is great for photo ops. We stayed at the Skogar Guest House here, which was lovely and a 10 minute walk to Skogafoss, the gigantic waterfall you see on every Iceland pic.

In Reykjavik, we did the Into the Volcano tour, a half day tour that takes you into a dormant volcano. Again, highly recommend and so different from anything I'd done before. You get a taste of very different landscapes every few hundred km in Iceland, so take your time driving from place to place. Stayed at the Radisson Blu literally right next to the famous hot dog stand in Reykjavik, which was a great central location.
