Thinking of going to Iceland during Summer2009. Anybody has an experience or an advice regarding a possible "side-trip" to Greenland? We will be four persons - the frame idea is to spend like 4-5days in Greenland...

Thank you.

OP: Remember that Greenland have many - very different - destinations.
Take a good look at the countrys official tourist info.
The obvious destinations for you are:
The settlement Kulusuk (with an airport served from Iceland).
Ammassalik/Tasiilaq - one of the 2 East Greenlandic towns (reached from Kulsuk by helicopter or boat). Beautiful nature - but it is East Greenland - very different culture from West Greenland -and with even worse "social" problems.
South Greenland (gateway Narsarsuaq) - very beautiful but not very "greenlandic" if you think of Icebergs etc. (i.e. lies south of Iceland)
Southern Mid Greenland like Nuuk (the capital): Relatively easy to reach from Iceland (depending on which airline routes operating next summer)
Northern Mid Greenland: Illulisat, Disko Bay etc - now you are in the area with big glaciers reaching the coast, icebergs etc - and dog sledging in the winter. You will need at couple of connecting flights = it will cost a fortune and you may have to use a couple of days going there and the same going back. And there will probably not be connections from Iceland every day - maybe once/week.

It may be a very big advantage (time and money) of putting the visit to Greenland visit in one end of the Iceland trip so that you can fly in "triangle: Europe (or US) -Iceland-Greenland-Copenhagen (-home)!!!

Bjoern, Borkur - very useful advices of yours!

I contacted gjtravel.is yesterday.

In you opinion, how much money can be involved in a side-trip to the East (Reykjavik -> Greenland -> Reykjavik) - to see at least some of the icebergs - and things like that. To do a day-long boat trip there, maybe some helicopter flight a little bit inland. Maybe some sea-kayaking...

The triangle trip sounds like a good idea - will keep it in my mind; however, currently, we are thinking to go to Iceland by boat with our car. To visit some friends in Norway and catch the ferry from Bergen...

Thank you for your time!

Re price:
Air tickets up there are not discount flights - and the distances are HUGE.
Cheapest will be EGreenland - but there are probably dorect flights to Ilulissat in the summer!
try the homepages of Air Iceland (not Iceland air - different companies) and Air Greenland.
The plane tickets are the major cost - when IN Greenland hotels etc. cost as in the costliest parts of Europe (hotels and restaurants) - but not significantly more.
If you are NOT prepared to the "100€/person/day"-type of travel transport this is NOT a destination for you.
Excursions (boat tours - not to mention helicopter tours) tends to be steep - but you can find all that from the homepages of teh official tourist offices of the greenlandic towns interested in.

Are you really sure that it (economically) is a good idea to drive all the way to Norway (unless you live there - guess not) and then sail (for days) just to save renting a car? Do you all have unlimited time?
I would guess that airtcketsrent of car would work out economically comparable to ferry+cabins+restaurant food on ferry + petrol going to Norway food and accommodation on the way to/from Norway! ..and you would save 1 week or more.
Even thinking of the visiting friends issue: Consider leaving the car in Norway and fly from there (or go down to Copenhagen and fly form there - making the triangle route)! Guess you will still save money (remembering total costs on ferry) - and def. you will save time!

The cost/benefit and time/money analyses are ongoing, that's for sure. The plan matures as we speak and I appreciate your advices and comments.

We are thinking of +/- three-weeks altogether in late June/first week of July. And I am aware of one week on a ferry boat: Bergen->IS->Denmark with a stop on Faeroe isles... Need to collect prices for all the means of transportation first.
