I've found a lot of information on wild camping in a tent but I cant find any on wild camping in a campervan. Does anyone know what the rules are for Camping in a Campervan? Can we just park on a beach, or on a side road anywhere for the night (other than in reserves and national parks)?

I do think that each country would have their own laws/rules for doing this, and in particular parts of the country as well.

I think to get any answer at all, you would have to give some information on what countries you plan to visit and some information on the sort of route you plan to take.

In Iceland, the rules on "camping" apply to camping in a vehicle, but with the very important detail that you mustn't drive the vehicle onto the "land", you need to drive onto some sort of a location commonly used by vehicles, such as a layby or some other piece of land clearly used by vehicles for parking on. In fact sometimes when you see a sign saying "no camping", what it often means is "no overnight parking" or "no driving vehicles off the road" - I have have camped in a tent in some locations marked "no camping" and was confident that - in that location - it didn't apply to camping in a tent. Roads are often raised up above the surrounding land, with a steep bank, which often makes it impossible to find spots to park up for extended distances, except at locations where routes to the exit the road have been deliberately constructed.

#1 - sorry this was meant specifically for Iceland. It was moved there after you replied I think.

Iviehoff - yes we will definitely not be "one of those tourists" who wreck the land by offroading. If we are just driving around and moving each day, do you think it will be hard to pull into a campsite at the end of the day and find a spot? We are going the first half of June, so hopefully before it gets too crowded. And there seem to be tons of campgrounds in the Westfjords.

In the westfjords, wildcamping is fairly easy by Icelandic standards, though you can still have the experience of driving 25km before you find a feasible spot. There are, as you say, plenty of campgrounds, and many of them are free to use, especially in quieter areas, and since they provide usefuls like a toilet and watertap, I would say use them when they are available.
