Hey there,

we (a group of 4) going to icland starting at 25th of sept. and staying there for 10 days. We planned our trip starting from Reykjavik, going to Golden Circle with Vik as next stop. Last part will be Skaftafell and maybe Höfn before we head home again.

It looks like there are enough hostels with proper beds. However for Skaftafell there is little to find apart form 1 hotel. Alternatives are camping (which is not really an option for us) and sleeping bag accommodations. One recommended on the net and the LP guide is in Bötli. However i can't finde them on the web. The only chance to book them is via telephone when you get there? Does anyone have different advice?

Also would it be recommended to get there with a sleeping bag and avoid hotels and get some cozy hostels with sleeping bag spaces instead?

Thx in advance
Tom

Hi,

I do not recommend either to camp in Iceland end of September. Campsites are closed now. Sleeping bag accommodation is a good option. You can rent sleeping bags directly in Iceland so you don´t have to carry them. Then, you pay much less the accommodation, that is convenient. This is common to use this option : http://www.iceland-camping-equipment.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&amp&p=37

In Skaftafell, there is only one campsite, you are in a National Park so no construction but the visitor center. You can find some accommodations on this page : http://accommodation.is/accommodation-iceland-map/
or as you are going to stay in the South of Iceland, you can also check the regional website for South : http://en.south.is/ - every accommodation of the region is listed.

Enjoy your trip!

They closed, I think because the owner has retired. Campsite and the hotel are now the only options close by Skaftafell. There's a number of options about 20km beyond Skaftafell, as can be seen on that south.is website.

10 days and you going to get as "far" as Hofn? Very strange decision.
I assume you'll rent a car - so I see no problem to find accommodation "on the go".

What's strange about it. Not everyone wants to do whistlestop moving on tours.

Reykjavik (2 days), Golden Circle (1 day), Vik (1 day), Skaftafell (1 day), Jokulsarlon (1 day) - all in all 6 days of very relaxing travel. Just to see small portion of Iceland around ring road? What else? To blow a whistle? :))
