Dear All,

My Girlfriend and I already bought a air plane ticket to Iceland on May 24, 2009 for a 11days travel.

We are planing to hire a FORD ESCAPE 4WD car (not a experienced 4WD driver though) to explore some spectacular spots in Interior Iceland, such as Landmannalaugar and Laki. However, since most F-roads do not open so early in late Mat according to hostorical record, we are quite worried if we can make our itinerary happen then. Would you please make some comments on our itinerary? If we can not make it for most of our interior schedule, should we book another conventional 2WD car instead or is there any
Backup Plan for Interior sightseeing you will recommend?

You've seen the stats and therefore you already know that rather more likely than not you won't be able to get to Laki or Landmannalaugar at that time, though the former is a little more likely. Also the present winter so far has not been like one of those those rather warm and unsnowy affairs they had a few years back that led to early road openings, so the omens are not good. Also if you are not an experienced 4wd driver, then attempting to drive to Laki (a rough road with a bad ford) early in the season may not be the most suitable route to increase your experience.

For the rest of your itinerary as stated, a 4wd would be a luxury. But there are some interior areas you can reasonably expect to be open at that time, and also other rough roads in more coastal areas where a 4wd would be useful. Husafell will be almost certainly be accessible. The Kaldidalur road from Myvatn to Husafell is generally open by late May, though if it is isn't you will probably be able to get there from the west instead. Thorsmork will be even more certainly be accessible (usually opens in April); but you need a special high clearance 4wd to get there on your own, so it may be better to go there on the bus if you don't plan to hire a monster 4wd.

Incidentally, your proposed route to Landmannalaugar makes no sense at any time of year; there is no connection between the 35 (Kjolur road) and the 208.

Hi!

My family and I are going to Iceland next week and we were planning to visit Landmannalaugar. Do you think it would be possible on May 28th?

We'll be driving a Hyundai Tucson. I believe the first road to open is F208 from the north (F26), that would be the only way if possible.

Thank you!
