Petrol prices in Iceland

My partner and I are coming to Iceland on Friday after a last-minute change of plan from our original destination in Lapland, and have lots of late planning to do! Obviously we'll do as much homework as possible on how to make the trip fit our tight budget, and any tips would be great, but I can search the forums for that. My main question now is about the cost of car rental: we're normally very independent travellers and tend not to enjoy guided tours, so were thinking of hiring a car to get us out to the highlights around Reykjavik over two or three days. I seem to remember hearing that Iceland was a prohibitively exppensive place to buy fuel though, and that was before the current financial crisis which can't have helped imports.

So how much is fuel going for in Reykjavik these days then? So we can work out whether it'll be cheap enough for us to guide ourselves rather than join a big group.

I wasn't searching for 'gas prices' when looking to see if this had been asked but 'petrol prices' - what can I say, it's late and I'm English.

This thread seems to have it covered, but please let me know if there's been any drastic change of late, I'm having trouble finding a price through normal web searches for some reason.

...and from those above you will see that petrol does not -and has never -cost but the usual WEuropean price!
Remember that the financial crisis in Icaland made the currency drop - so the final price of imported goods have - in first approximation - stay the same.

Actually the price of petrol cannot be really important - you won't be driving that many kms - a good dinner for 2 will cost more than you can possibly use on petrol in a few days!
For car rentals: In addition to link above - Why mot simply get the usual offers on the net from Avis/Hertz etc?? You may find local companies with slightly better offers, but you get a good indication from the "big" ones.

For those interested, during our trip the cost of petrol was around 149kr/l, so around 75p, a good bit cheaper than the UK. The reason I wanted to know the approximate cost was so I could decide how cost effective it would be to drive instead of just taking a tour or two, and the reason I didn't just go to Avis, Hertz etc is that they're always much more expensive than the local cheapest option. Our hotel organised us rental through Berg, which was 6500kr per day, well below the 9000kr or so quoted by Avis. This made it much cheaper than doing the tours but only got us a little 1.2 litre automatic Chevrolet thing which was a bit of a challenge to drive around the icy roads!
