Hi,
Im thinking about travelling to Iceland in mid march, what are the chances of seeing the northern lights around then?
Thanks

solar activity so far this season has been really low, so the chances of seeing them are iffy. The ring of aurora-prediction sighting has in general been just north of Iceland when I check it, and I've only seen them a few times so far. March is a fine time as long as you've got enough activity in the sky though :)

Note that around 22nd March daylength is 12 hours all over this globe, so March is still fine in respect of the night being dark.
the northern lights as such are there all year -depending on solar activity as #1 describes - they do not vary on season - it is only the darkness you need that is so scarce in th summer.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info, obviously the northern light are not my number 1 reason for visiting Iceland but they sure would be a bonus.
Thanks again,
olilia

The chance will be relatively small because of the reasons explained above plus the often cloudy weather combined with the fact northern lights are more frequent a bit further to the north eg North Cape.
I saw northern lights mid April 2007 in the Mývatn area in northern Iceland. Read my more elaborate response in this thread.
