I'm researching the possibility of hiking the popular Laugaveger hiking route from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork, or reverse. I see that the summer bus schedule ends in mid-September, so I'm mostly curious about access to and from the trail-heads. I don't expect the huts to be open, but was hoping it would still be possible as a self-supported journey with tent. Any help related to transportation and trail-conditions would be appreciated.

Already now, in August, rescue teams have been helping people stuck in snow on this route.
Mid October, absolutely not possible !

Unless you are a VERY experienced mountaineer with pro equipment I would strongly advise against taking the route in October due to high risks of foul weather and no open shelters on the route. It is much more scenic and enjoyable in the summer. As Borkur pointed out several rescues have already taken place due to foul weather that people were ill equipped for.
