Hey all,

Planning a day-long landscape photography trip out of Reykjavik in late March. We'll already hit several "landmark" destinations on the previous three days' tour; for our last, free day we're considering a "super-jeep" tour of Landmannalaugar or perhaps Thorsmork. I wonder what conditions on the ground might be like that time of year. Will all the colours still be buried under snow? If so, perhaps the rock formations of Thorsmork would make a more photogenic stop than the hues of Landmannalaugar? Anyone have experience with these locals in late March?

for our last, free day

Driving off into the deep wilderness is probably not the cleverest thing to do on a day before catching a flight.

Both places will be deeply covered in snow.

If so, perhaps the rock formations of Thorsmork would make a more photogenic stop than the hues of Landmannalaugar?

Google some images, see what you think.

Thanks for the "view from the ground," so to speak, of Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork in March. I think we'll wait until closer to our departure date, or perhaps even until we're in Iceland, to check local conditions in both places and then make a decision.

Is Lanmannalaugar and Thorsmork truly "deep wilderness?" Cool! I don't usually expect to get into really wild places as a daytrip from a city. We will do the "super-jeep" trip with a guide, and I expect he or she will make responsible decisions about our itinerary based on conditions at the time.

L, very definitely, and is only accessible about 3 months of the year to road vehicles. Th is perhaps not quite "deep" wilderness, since it is within about 10km of habitation (as the raven flies), and although in principle it is accessible about half the year to road vehicles, there is this very deep ford which in practice makes it more difficult for the tourist to get to in a hired vehicle.
