Hi

Yet an other question. For the moment we are looking into transport options to Kverkfjoll, Sigurdarskali Hut. We plan on hiking from there on to Herdubreid and maybe eventually Myvatn. Is there anybody who has an idea on how we could get there?
Thanks

First question - are you going hiking only?
I think this is possible (as people discovered most of the places on foot) but in these days people are using good off-road trucks to get there.
Like the one on this picture

Left one, of course, although I made much of that route on the right "suv".

More about off-roads over there

So first you have to answer - how you are planning to travel in general.

And have you checked this site?
http://www.nat.is/Information%20Centres/travel_information_sprengisandur.htm

It will lead you further to more specific info.
And there is bus tours from Myvatn to Askja (Drekki)
Plus regular bus service across the country

PS. You can hire a truck to get you there as well ;-)
But that's a separate question...

One more thing.
You mentioned you are coming in the beginning of June, right?
Then most of the highland roads will be closed.
Check weather and roads before you plan your routes.

Hi

Thanks a lot for the very helpfull info. I should have mentioned it earlier but we don't have a driver's license so we are dependend on transport by bus or so. We indeed arrive in the beginning of June but we have until september. So, at first we will look into other hiking possibilities and wait until the highland roads are open. We thought about starting in the Reykjanes Peninsula perhaps, or Hornstrandir.

Thanks again &
All the best

For Hornstrandir, you'll need to find out when the boats start running to get you there. According to this the very first departure is on 16 June from Bolungarvik to Adalvik. (Vigur is no help to you, that's a small island in the fjord). http://www.vesturferdir.is/?k=2&s=aaetlun&lang=en

For early June, you may be best off in the Eastfjords where there is a network of hiking routes. http://www.nat.is/gonguleidireng/gonguleidir_viknaslodir_al.htm

There are regular coach tours to Kverkfjoll out of Akureyri and Myvatn, which can also be used as transport to the hut. Run by SBA Nordurleid. http://english.sba.is/Sightseeingtours/AskjaKverkfjollVatnajokull/

Well that changes everything! With that time you can easily move from area to area by buses and simply walk everything around, going from one campsite to another on foot.
As to Kverkfjoll you have two options - to go there from let's say Akureyri by bus (I think you could make a deal with bus company and pay only for transportation one way).
To find out someone with a truck who would be willing pick you up on your rote somewhere ...let's say in Landmanalaugur ... and to drop you at Kverkfjoll.
