We are planning a 2 week trip around Iceland in June - below is our itinery. We wondered whether anyone thought we were missing anything out and whether we should spend more/less time in certain places? We are planning to hire a car for the time we are travelling outside Reykjavik.

Days 1 - 4 in Reykjavik, Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle
Day 5 Drive up to Isafjordur via the Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Days 6-7 In the Westernfjords, staying in Isafjordur
Day 8 Drive to Djupavik, have a dip in the pool at Nordurfjordur, stay in Djupavik
Day 9 Drive to Saudarkrokur, have a dip in the Grettislaugh hot pool, stay in Saudarkrokur
Day 10 Whitewater rafting at Varmahlio, drive to Akureyri to stay
Day 11 Myvatn Lake area, staying in Akureyri
Day 12 Jokulsarglijufur National Park, staying in Akureyri
Day 13 Husavik, whale watching, staying in Akureyri
Day 14 Drive back to Reykjavik

Thanks so much!

  • Leave Reykjavik (mostly) to the end. Things don't always work to exact timetables in Iceland, so it is wise to have something in hand.
  • Day 5 is too much. See Snaefellsness, overnight at Stykkisholmur and get the morning boat the next day. The ferry takes about 3 hours. You are still giving yourself a rather perfunctory look at the Westfjords, arriving at Brjanslaekur at midday and driving straight to Isafjordur, and it might be raining.
  • After Westfjords, you might be disappointed by Saudarkrokur.
  • If you stay some nights at Myvatn rather than Akureyri, you'll do less back and forth driving. Personally I think Myvatn (including Krafla) is hard to visit in less than a day and a half; it depends whether you intend to see several sights at J....r or just Dettifoss.
  • You can go whale watching at Reykjavik, and in terms of the range of species seen Reykjavik seems to be a better place. The advantage of Husavik is nice wooden boats. Trips get cancelled if the sea is too rough, and at Reykjavik you will have more to do if you are told to come back later or tomorrow or something.

Ragainis, the last time I checked, there was NO car rental with the name "GILDO". The authorities in Iceland have not issued any licenses to "GILDO", therefore the insurance is not valid. In other words:
The car rental is ILLEGAL !, and not insured.
There is no valid Tour operators license for "GILDO" , therefore: GILDO is NOT licensed or insured to sell, or operate tours in Iceland.
GILDO is not a valid company, and can therefore NOT charge for any service provided by them self.
www.travelcarsiceland.com is a pirate operation, to be avoided.

I don't know about the westfjords and all that, but I do see that you're missing out on some highlights like Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell national park. The hot pools sound lovely though. :-)

There's also the lovely nature baths in the Mývatn area, close to Reykjalid. It's like a tiny Blue Lagoon but much cheaper. It has a view over the lake and surrounding mountains.
It's really worth spending at least one night in that area (for example at Eldá guesthouse in Reykjalid), that way you can see as much of the sights as possible (there are many interesting sights and walks, get the nature organisation leaflet at the Eldá guesthouse... I loved Hverir area, and the lava fields elsewhere, and the craters), and spend your evening dipping in the nature baths (open til 10 pm I believe).

You could also do searches in the Thorn Tree for other people's two week itineraries.

On my website you will find mine, I drove it in 12 days (and had some extra days in Reykjavik at the start and the end). I also listed some Iceland-specific tips.

Have fun!
Cécile

I agree with a lot of the above. I also didn't visit the Westfjords so can't comment on that area.

You don't want to miss Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell national park. The costtal area at Dyrholaey is also lovely.

Spend at least a full day around lake Mývatn.

Half a day is enough for Reykjavik.

That looks like a great trip you have planned! I rarely visit the same place twice, but I found Iceland to be worth a second (and even a third) visit, with it's expansive lava fields, fascinating history and culture, and intriguing modernization (when you see The Pearl, you will understand).

I recommend taking a midnight volcano hike. It's an incredible feeling to stand in the middle of a volcano crater in the middle of the night with the sun directly overhead (and it's a great thing to do while you're still a bit jet-lagged, if that is an issue).

I also suggest you visit Thingvellir (Þingvellir), the site of the first parliament in the world. There you can see the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates, a truly unique geological experience.

One more thing you might want to check out are the Icelandic horse farms that offer riding tours. It's a great way to see the lava fields, and no matter what your level of riding experience is, the guides can match you up with a horse to suite your ability. (Some need no direction at all, they simply know where to go and when to stop!) You don't even have to worry about bringing a rain suit, they provide you with appropriate apparel for the weather, which is often rainy.

I hope you have a wonderful trip. It will be an experience that you will never forget!

The sun is never directly overhead in Iceland. In summer, in the middle of the night, (taking that phrase in a vague rather than a precise sense) then the sun is either close to or below the horizon.
