Greetings LP Forum Folk -

Excited to be heading on a 2nd trip to Iceland (last time was 11 nights, "classic Ring Road" type of itinerary, 4 years ago). We loved it so much, we are planning our return this June. We're planning to slow it down a bit this trip for various reasons. Looking for feedback on our planned self-drive (2WD) itinerary and any other special hints or tips this forum may have to provide. I like posting about planned itineraries, because someone inevitably makes a few great suggestions to include, and I also find (hope) it is helpful when trip planning for other readers browsing the forums...

Day 1 - Arrive Keflavik really late, so planning to stay overnight (O/N) in Keflavik.
Day 2 - Rise and tour the Reykjanes Peninsula area before heading to Reykjavik - O/N Reykjavik
Day 3 - Plan to just enjoy the day in Reykjavik - O/N Reykjavik
Day 4 - Another day to just enjoy Reykjavik, stock up on road snacks, etc.. Possible short half-day trip - suggestions?
Day 5 - Depart Reykjavik and drive to Snaefellsnes Peninsula - enjoy the south side. O/N Langaholt or area
Day 6 - Enjoy the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, making our way to/through north side. O/N in Stykkisholmur
Day 7 - Another day around Sanefellsnes, and another O/N in Stykkisholmur
Day 8 - Baldur Ferry from Stykkisholmur into the Westfjords region. Would like to se Latrabjard and Raudisandur, plan to O/N in Patreksfjordur though
Day 9 - Another day in and around the Southwest Westfjords, O/N in Bildudalur (as we're trying out a new guesthouse being opening this June by the folks we're staying in Reykjavik with)
Day 10 - Drive Bildudalur to Isafjordur. Dynjandi waterfall. Other suggestions en route? O/N Isafjordur.
Day 11 - Spend day in and around Isafjordur area, suggestions welcome! 2nd O/N Isafjordur.
Day 12 - Drive Isafjodur twards Homavik, but may take it slow and spend a night at/around Heydalur
Day 13 - Longer drive day from Heydalur to Reykholt area. Would like to see Hraunsfoss, etc. O/N Reykholt
Day 14 - Make our way south, staying just outside Selfoss. We've done "Golden Circle", but know we could pass through en route. Looking for other suggestions. O/N guesthouse around Selfoss, but not in Selfoss
Day 15 - Would like to re-visit some sights we liked in this area last go, Seljalandfoss, etc. and dine in Stokkeseyri again! Suggestions welcome! A 2nd O/N in guesthouse close to Selfoss.
Day 16 - Depart for Keflavik for return flight home (early evening).

Thanks!

Hi! Instead of staying for two days in Reykjavik, why don't you select one day for visiting Landmannalaugar? You'll need 4x4 in this case, I believe, though you can book a tour , like Landmannalaugar tours (http://www.landmannalaugartours.com/)or something. It is beautiful and truly Icelandic J

Don't forget to book the ferry well in advance. I think the Latrabjarg area is special - there is also somewhere special in the aera called Raudisandur which is nice to visit. There is beautifully situated accommodation at Breidavik, and maybe also some other places closer which would allow you to spend the following morning ather than driving straight over to Patreksfjordur same day.

I think it is better to leave poking around Reykjavik to the end, gives you time in hand in case anything goes wrong, as it does in Iceland more often than other places.

Thank you Anastasia_131 and iviehoff.

I do love the Landmannalaugur suggestion. We'll look into it a bit more. We had intended to do that in 2011, but did a special independent guided tour around Thorsmork instead as the roads into Landmannalaugur were still closed in early June - and we had a great experience through rivers in a super jeep, a short hike, etc.

The Baldur ferry let me know to book 2-3 months ahead of time, so we will definitely take that advice. I like the idea of staying at Breidavik; however, my partner feels a little more comfortable with the accommodation options in Patreksfjordur for this particular trip. I would like to try and include Raudisandur too!

Not a bad suggestion about moving Reykjavik at the end. We did feel we short-changed the city last time. While we loved and preferred the countryside and villages, etc., we also really liked Reykjavik and wished we slowed down to enjoy it a bit more.

It is great that you decided to spend more time in Reykjavik. It is much more than just a starting point J I suggest visiting Reykjavik Art Museum and taking a walk to the church – Hallgrímskirkja - to admire the view to the town from the bell tower.

That looks like a well planned itineray to me..I´ve only ever stayed in the Southern part of the Westfjords - but Latrabjarg and raudisandur and Dynjandi were truly spectacular and well worth the visit. The only thing I would suggest is to spend more time around Reykholt if possible as there is so much to see besides Hraunfoss, if you can adjust it so you are spending two nights in the area instead of just one I think you´d appreciate it.

Geefmon, Itinerary sounds cool! Im asking for advice from you as, this is your second trip and you appear to know your way around. Thank you in advance for passing on knowledge!

From your experiences, what do you recommend for 10 days, starting in Reyk. I'll have a car and be solo, Do not want to rush..Willing to wing it but wouldn't miss something you say I've got to see. Young and athletic & love adventure if this helps your recommendations! Thanks!

Young and athletic & love adventure

Assuming you are going in summer, then going on a multi-day trek will be the thing a fit, adventurous person will most remember.

In Bildudalur, you can drive further to a really beautiful valley where you are going to see something really surprising, the art piece of a Icelandic artist !

Also, in Thingeyri, I recommend going for a whalewhatching tour with Eaglefjord. This is really personnalise service and the captain used to be a fisherman so he knows the sea and where to go to found them. He is also a good cook and you can enjoy his giant grill ! awesome experience!
