I'm hoping to end a minor disagreement my friend and I are having prior to our upcoming trip to Iceland, we're renting a car but do we need a 4x4 or not? We will be doing the southern half of the country Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon to Snæfellsjökull (if we get up that far on the west coast). Our dates are early March, the 8th - 16th.

One of us has read that we do NOT need a 4x4, that a regular car with studded tires will be fine, the other one has read that a 4x4 is preferred/necessary. Which is it? The cost difference is pretty extreme which is why we're hoping someone here can give a bit more clarity to the situation. Neither of us is familiar with driving a 4x4 so even if we have one will it be useful?

Thanks for your advice, I hate to start off 9 days together with one of us feeling like they didn't get what they think we need.

Not useful. 4x4 is only useful for mountain roads, and they will be closed. 4x4 not useful for icy main roads, regular car with studded tyres better.

Hi,

Indeed, you do not have to rent a 4x4 as the main road, road N°1 is cleaned really often.
However, this is more a matter of savety in case you have some really bad weather during your stay (I hope not). In that case, this is good to have a 4x4, but this is not mandatory.

Have a good trip in Iceland!

2WD will be fine..but check the weather and road conditions at vegagerdin.is

On a side note you do realise that there won´t be any boat trips on the lagoon at Jökulsarlon in March?
