Hi

Can anyone tell me approximately how long it would take to drive from Isafforour to Reykjahlid in the summer?

Additionally, can you easily see JOKULSARGLJUFUR National Park without a 4x4 in the summer?

Many thanks

The drive is one day, 08:00 - 18:00.
You can visit the Glacier lagoon without a 4WD, it´s next to the road !

Sorry, I misread. You can visit the Jokulsárgljúfur park without a 4WD, there are GOOD gravel roads there.

You can of course visit the two main attractions of Jökulsárgljúfur without a 4wd: because Ásbyrgi itself is on a tarred road; and the road up the east bank of the park (providing one of the two accesses to Dettifoss) is a gravel road open to 2wd.

But the road on the west bank of Jökulsárgljúfur (the road from which Hljóðaklettur etc is accessed) is classified as an F road, F862, which means that the insurance for a hired 2wd will typically be invalid. In practice this road, at least between (near) Ásbyrgi and Vesturdalur (for Hljóðaklettur) is pretty good (assuming they keep up the maintenance), as Borkur says. But it deteriorates considerably as it goes further south, and the section from Dettifoss to the ring road (at least) is very rough. Or at least that was the case when I last passed it.

By the way that ð wotsit in Ísafjörður, etc is a kind of d, not a kind of o.
