Hello.
I decided to buy a plane ticket to Iceland 2 days ago and will be arriving on tuesday november 4th. I am looking for general advice for having a good time during this time of the year while keeping my travel costs at a minimum.
Does anyone have advice on common mistakes made by foreigners regarding spending while in Iceland? Im most concerned with food prices.
Will being a strict vegetarian be a problem?
Is it best to book hostels prior to arrival, or is waiting until i get there a better idea?
Really any info is welcomed.....
Thanks!!

Good for you to choose Iceland.
I´ve been in the business for 25 years, and I know some of the mistakes people do.
Bring WATERPROOF chlothing and good WATERPROOF hiking shoes, for all tours, and layers.
Browse through hostels and accomodation, and prebook. The cheapest ones would be places like: http://www.herinn.is/pages/enhet.aspx?nr=116 The cheapest, and right in the center, http://www.hotelcabin.is/ a good low budget hotel, 800 metres from center, good for vegetarians (decent buffet for dinner, low price), http://www.gjtravel.is/borgartun.asp?strAction=getPublication&intPublId=114 A nice guesthouse, next to Cabin hotel, http://hostel.is/default.asp?cat_id=51 the hostel, next to the swimmingpool, 1,5 Km. from center, good bus line, or nice walk.
Of course, if hotel price is not a concern, there are many in the centre it self, just browse the web.
Buy alcohol and tobacco at the duty free, it´s less than half the price in town.
Use your credit card, for best rates. If you want to use cash, there is a bank and a ATM, just outside customs, and ATM´s all over town, check the ratings: http://www.sedlabanki.is/?PageID=183
Due to poor (for us) exchange ratings of the "krona", everything is very inexpensive up here, so food cost is not a cocern.
There are many Vegetarian places in town: http://www.happycow.net/europe/iceland/reykjavik/index.html as you can see, there is one close to Cabin and the Guesthouse, "Madur Lifandi".
If you should want to take a tour, and there are 3, or more of you together, you should check prices, and then contact me, I might be able to get you a cheaper and better one.
B-)

Biggest mistake is to do everything at the last minute without any research and hope that you can get a good deal. :-)

Hey there,
What was the name of the "main street" downtown where all the bars and restaurants were? I was there in 2005, and i forget.

I have booked one restaurant thru icelandair travel, but what others are good to goto that do not only offer a Christmas Buffet? Please suggest your top 3 restaurants downtown that are not super expensive, but perhaps 4 out of 5 stars.

Also I plan to goto the Viking Village (Fjörukráin) - great food here! Is there anything else to do in the area of Hafnarfjörður?
