Hi all,

I wanted to know of people's experiences hiring a car in Iceland.

I've booked a car, but there are a lot of extra insurances that can be added on for gravel damage, ash damage and flood damage.

We're not going to be very adventurous with our travels so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on whether these extra insurances are necessary?

Also, is there something amazing we would miss out on if we didn't go a bit off-road?

Thanks for your help
Hannah

Nobody knows, but at least you and not allowed to drive OFF- Road and in a 2wd rented not on the F-marked roads.

There are so many amazing things in Iceland you can only see a few of them in a holiday. Some of them are easy to get to, some difficult to get to, and some extremely difficult to get to. You can come back and see some more of them on future visits.

To be clear, in a hired 2wd you can drive on some gravel roads, but your hirer will not permit you to drive on rougher gravel roads, mostly in the interior, which mostly, but not all, have an F in front of their road number. Your hirer will show you where you can drive. But you can certainly drive around for a couple of weeks, seeing many amazing things, and driving few if any gravel roads. It rather depends on what you actually want to prioritise.
