Hi all,

I was looking at another rival travel publishers forum (Rough Guide) and someone posted the comment that Halgrimskirkja church was covered in scaffolding.

Is this still the case or just a mistake? I am looking to visit in June 2009 for three days around Reykjavik and Golden Circle tour etc. and was wondering if the scaffolding is for the long term and would be up around then.

I'm a keen photogapher and would like to take some photos without scaffolding in place.

Many thanks,

Brian

Last time I looked, the church was still wearing the scaffolding. It's being repaired and there is no knowing when it will be finished. Could be next January, could be in 2010.

The scaffolding begin in May 2008, and the contractor expected it to be up "for about a year"

Many thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll have to take pictures of the church with scaffolding!

Is the tower open?

According to their website the tower is open every day from 9 am to 3 pm.

I rang the church up the other day to check (contact details on www.hallgrimskirkja.is) and they said the scaffolding should be down by Autumn next year. So it will still be up in June 2009 I'm afraid, and not looking good from the outside!

You can still go up the tower but the view over the city centre (the most interesting view for most visitors) is blocked. The other three directions are still ok. However, if it's views from the church, not of the church, you are thinking of, then I'd say the Pearl has better views - out in open air and a true 360 degree panorama (although not as high up as the church).
