Hey there,
I'm going to be in Iceland 13-16 DEC. I'll have a car on that monday for 1 day. Where should I go? Where can i go that is possible for a day trip, and where i will not run out of gas? Any ideas?

Not a reply, but a related question. I'm going to be in Iceland for about eight days in November. For the most part I plan to sightsee in and around Reykjavik, but I was also planning to rent a car at some point. Any recommendations for a 1-3 road trip?

Is it possible to drive myself out to Gullfoss, or are the roads sort of too rugged for a compact car?

You could also go to Thingvellir national park, it is about a 40 minute drive outside of Reykjavik.

Is it a normal hire car, i.e. not a 4 wheel drive? If that is the case then you'll have some trouble driving the full Golden Circle as the roads might be icy. I imagine you'd be ok though as it's a well used route and will be cleared. Just make sure your hire tyres are nail tyres!!
Definitely do the Golden Circle of Pingvellir > Laugarvatn > Geysir > Gulfoss and then back via Selfoss and Hveragerdi (nice stop) before heading over the mountain back to Reykjavik. You can obviously do it the reserve route too.
Keep in mind that in December Iceland has minimal daylight, probably from 10:30 to 14:30ish. So you'll either have to do the circle quickly or cut some out.
