Hi all, i went into my local travel agent and ordered some ISK for my trip next week, they told me it would take two days to arrive which was ok, but then today i get a call to say that there supplier travel X no longer supply ISK as the currency is so unstable at the moment. My travel agent was helpful in offering USD or euro travler's cheque's but this still leaves me arriving monday evening with no ISK cash. Has anyone else had this problem what did you do? Thank you Darren

Where in the world do you buy cash at a travel agent - how much extra do you pay for that?????

Now I do not know if your own currency is extremely "small" or from very far away - if not do not waste money in first buying € or USD - and forget travler checks - nobody uses than - far too costly to bay and again to cash.

But as mentined above: simply buy in Reykjavik airport or even better put a plastic card into an ATM and there you go.

Don´t worry, bring your CC. or use your currency, most foreign currency is widely accepted. There are ATM´s all over the place, and "everybody" accepts credit cards, but you might have to go to banks to get your travellers checks changed, I don´t recommend those.

Why would anyone worry about bringing local currency with them anywhere in the world in this day and age? I just hop on a plane with whatever money is in my pocket. I then use an ATM at whatever airport I'm at to get money.

#4 - not quite anywhere in the world. There are, believe it or not, still some countries which don't have modern banking and you have to bring suitable cash, Myanmar for example.

I thought traveler checks vanished from the world in the 80's.... or early 90's ;-)

Even if Iceland has gone "bankrupt", it doesn't mean it got rid of all its technology! ATM still works, 90% of the shops (100% of restaurants and hotels) still take visa, mc and so on!

I admit it. I carried traveller's checks until the mid 90's. I didn't use them. Just carried them and then carired them back. People would not accept them at stores here in the states and I just took them back to the bank where I got them. I did that 4 or 5 times before learning not to bother.
