Hi,

We're going to Iceland in the beginning of June. Our main activity will be trekking. We wondered where we could purchase Coleman fuel (white gas, camping fuel) for our MSR whisperlite stove. Is it easy or rather hard to find? Do we have to look at petrolstations, hardware stores or can we only buy it in outdoor stores?

Many thanks

Apparently it can be found in Reykjavik at certain outdoor stores, and pray they'll sell you less than 5 litres. You'd be lucky to find it outside R,but the good news is that your stove runs fine on petrol. Or maybe you decide you don't want to hunt around R for it and just get some petrol. Sometimes you can also find some left behind at the main Laugardalur campsite in Reykjavik, but early season you'll be lucky.

What is «Coleman fuel (white gas, camping fuel)»?
People use so many names for the same thing you know....
Coleman gas ... cans? are available in the sport/outdoor stores in Reykjavik, Akureyri and at most of the gas stations all around Iceland.

The Coleman fuel / white gas is a colourless liquid and comes in plastic bottles of 1 to 5 liters. With our stove we have a fuelbottle so we refill this and attach it to our campingstove.
In most countries we've been travelling to we could find it in hardware stores, petrolstations or outdoorshops. But we posted the question just to save us some time searching for it...

I guess I know what you are talking about. And I guess you can buy it at gas stations all over country (including 1L bottles).

Maybe a few, but not generally. It isn't commonly available,.

And, as these people say (the shop at Landmannalaugar), even when you can find "purified benzin" as they call it, it is hard to find less than 5 litres. Even they, who are specifically trying to serve the campers and trekkers, only "try" to have it available. In fact I think did see it there once, decanted into unlabelled reused plastic bottles, and, like everything there, at a very high price.

Okay.
I'll do a simple thing - I will ask Coleman people here where to get fuel for their stuff in Iceland except their store.

Is your stove multifuel (international) or "white gas" only?

I was right – it’s no problem to get fuel for Coleman and other brands ;-)
