Hi
I have a friend visiting Iceland this summer,so I have a few questions on her behalf
*can anyone recommend a good cheap reliable car hire company, possibly a camper?
*Is there any difference in price if picked up from the airport or from Reykjavik?
*Are there any places in Reykjavik that rent camping gear, and what about getting gas bottles around the island?
*is it possible to camp anywhere or is it restricted to campsites

Cheap and reliable car hire are incompatible. There are numerous car hire discussions on the forum for less-expensive but reasonably-reliable recommendations. Airport pickup is usually at a premium.
Yes you can rent camping gear in Reykjavik, google it. Gas bottles are available at most filling stations among other places.
You can wild camp but not just anywhere, though it is increasingly informally discouraged. You can't wild camp in strict nature reserves which are clearly signed, or within 1km of an organised campsite, nor close to an inhabited building nor on someone's cultivated or fenced land - cultivated includes hay-field. Whilst cultivated land is only about 1% of the land area, it does tend to ribbon along the roads and be fenced; meanwhile if land is uncultivated it is often because it is rocky, stony, sandy, marshy, steep, wind-swept, etc. The greater problem is actually taking a vehicle off the road because driving off road (road here includes 4wd dirt track) is illegal, and most roads are built up on a causeway above the land for drainage. Thus you have to find some customary parking spot or similar. There are numerous organised campsites and in less favoured locations they are often free.

Correct although September is shoulder. Questions on actual prices and difference between pick up Keflavik vs. Reykjavik airport vs Reykjavik town are easily and best figured out by visiting the rental companies homepages and/or getting quotes, which from the big, international companies is a automatic process that takes a few seconds
Hi,
yes, you can rent camping equipment at Iceland Camping Equipment. They are located downtown Reykjavik and offer pick-up 24/7.
For the car rental, this is hard to answer as there are so many of them and more difficult, the prices are changing a lot depending on the period. the international companies are said to be more expensive than locals.
Procar, Geysir, Icelandia have a good reputation but again there are so many good companies.
The high season is July-August but with 1 million tourist expected in 2015, it tends to be more spread.
As you are going to camp, the campsites are open from May until end of August/middle of September.
